2/11/07 vs. Black Jacks (5-3-5)
In this week 4 rematch against the Black Jacks, there was some playoff positioning on the line, as we were one point behind them for fifth place, with the possibility of moving up into fourth. In the past, all of our games have been close and this one should have been no different.
We started out like a house on fire, torching the Black Jacks goalie for 3 quick goals less than five minutes into the contest. Fargo blasted a shot home from slot after a careless turnover; less than 30 seconds later Dennis fired one in from the right circle and 90 seconds after that Ike dropped the bomb with a shorthanded breakaway goal. We felt very confident this would be a route, however, there was still plenty of time remaining. With seven minutes remaining, the Black Jacks got on the board as a shot slipped past Josh, under his right arm. A couple minutes later, after a poor clearing attempt, Josh stopped a shot from the slot, but couldn’t handle the rebound as they slipped it just inside the post to close the gap to one. With less than two minutes remaining, the Black Jacks struck again as the man cut down the right wing, broke to the front of the net and roofed one over Josh’s outstretched pad. There was some controversey as to whether it actually went in, but the far side referee clearly said it went in and it was all knotted up at three after one period. Through the first 13 games, we had only given up 4 first period goals, and in this game alone we surrendered 3. It was a sign of things to come.
In the second period, we seemed to get ourselves back on track defensively until Keith turned the puck over at center ice. The opposing player walked in and fired one to the stick side beating Josh to take a 4-3 lead. About 90 seconds later, as a loose puck was sliding down the right wing, a race was brewing and Josh was debating whether to come out to play it. He stopped midway out as he changed his mind, but as he went to move back into the net, the foot he pushed off with slipped, leaving the net unguarded for an easy tap in goal to make it 5-3, which was how period number two ended.
The third period began with us peppering shots on net, but not finding any goals coming our way. About seven minutes into the period, off a face off, Tom N. tried to knock down a rising shot from the point, but it deflected off his glove, off Keith’s shoulder pad and into the empty, far-side of the net. This was the backbreaker, putting them up 6-3. To pour salt in the wounds, the Black Jacks added their final goal on a breakaway with about 4 minutes remaining. By far, this was our worst game of the season after the first 5 minutes. Josh also had his poorest outing, allowing a season-high seven goals. In addition, after leading the league in goals against for the majority of season, this game dropped the team to third.
Final Score: 3-7
Next week we head into the playoffs, against the 3rd place Enforcers.
